Laser hair removal has a reputation as something women book. Men book it too, and their reasons tend to be practical. A back that's impossible to shave alone. A neckline that never looks clean by the afternoon. Chest hair that's more than they want at the gym or on vacation. This post covers what men in Birmingham and around Oakland County should know before booking.
The areas men ask about
We treat legs, underarms, bikini and Brazilian, arms, back, chest and face, for women and men. Men usually start with four of them.
Back
The back comes up a lot. It makes sense. You can't reach it. You can't shave it evenly, and waxing it is unpleasant. Laser hair removal on the back can cover the full area or just the upper back and shoulders, depending on what you want. We'll talk through where the line should sit so the result looks natural.
Chest
Some men want the chest fully cleared. Others want it thinned, or just want to tidy the area between the chest and the neckline. Because laser hair removal reduces hair over a series rather than all at once, there's room to decide how far you want to go as you see how your hair responds.
Arms
Arms can be treated on their own, and they're also worth considering alongside a back or chest plan so the transition between treated and untreated areas looks even. We'll tell you if it's worth it.
Face
For men, face treatment is usually about shape rather than removing a beard. Typical requests include cleaning up the neck below the beard line, the upper cheeks or the area between the eyebrows. Since laser reduction is lasting, it's worth being careful about where a beard line goes. We'll take time with you at the consultation to mark it in a way you'll still like years from now.
What's different about treating men
Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair. Dark, coarse hair often gives the laser a clear target, which is one reason it tends to respond well over a series. Coarse hair can also mean the session feels a little more intense in dense areas. Most clients describe the feeling as a quick, warm snap against the skin, and our laser has cooling built in.
Men's hair can also be denser and more spread out over large areas like the back. That affects session length and the number of sessions you'll need, which is why we give you a plan and a quote for your specific areas rather than a general figure. Results vary.
Skin tone matters too. Before any treatment, we look at your skin and your hair and adjust the settings to suit them. Our post on laser hair removal for every skin tone explains why that assessment always comes first.
How the process works
Your first visit is a consultation and a patch test. We'll ask what's bothering you, look at the areas you want treated and explain what a realistic result looks like. You'll leave knowing the recommended plan, how far apart sessions will be and what it costs. Pricing is transparent, with per-session and package options.
Sessions are spaced several weeks apart because hair grows in cycles and the laser only affects hair in its active growth phase. More sessions, more hairs caught. The goal is a lasting reduction in how much hair grows back and how coarse it is. Most clients come back occasionally for maintenance after the main series.
Prep is simple. Shave the area the day before, skip waxing and plucking for a few weeks beforehand, and keep the area out of the sun for around two weeks. For the back, get help with the shave. Our guide on how to prepare for laser hair removal covers the rest, including what to avoid after a session. If you're a regular at the gym, plan around a day or two without heavy workouts after each appointment.
Questions men ask us
Is laser hair removal on the back worth it?
It can be, especially if you're tired of asking someone to shave your back or you've had a bad waxing experience. Whether it's a good fit depends on your hair color and skin, which is what the consultation is for. If we don't think you're a good candidate, we'll tell you.
Will it remove my beard completely?
Only if that's what you want. Because the reduction is meant to last, we'll talk it through carefully at the consultation before anything is treated. If what you're after is a cleaner shape, we work on the edges and the neck and leave the beard itself alone.
Can I book during the workday?
We're open Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 4. An appointment can often fit around a lunch break or a Saturday morning.
