A question we hear a lot at Summer Skin is some version of "Will this work on my skin?" Fair enough. Older laser hair removal advice often said it only suited people with light skin and dark hair, and plenty of people still assume that. Laser technology has changed, and the honest answer today is that a wide range of skin tones can be treated. The way to know for you is a skin assessment before anything else happens. We always start there.
How the laser decides what to heat
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin, the pigment that gives hair and skin their color. The laser's light is absorbed by pigment in the hair and turns into heat, which travels down to the follicle. That heat is what reduces the follicle's ability to grow hair again.
Skin has melanin too. If the skin around the hair has a lot of pigment, it also absorbs some of that light. The skill in laser hair removal is choosing settings that send energy into the hair while keeping the surrounding skin comfortable and safe. That balance is different for every combination of skin tone and hair color.
What we look at in a skin assessment
Your first visit at our Birmingham studio starts with a consultation and a patch test. During the consultation, we look closely at your skin, your hair and your recent history.
We start with your natural skin tone and how your skin tends to react to sun. Some skin tans easily and rarely burns, while some burns before it tans. It says a lot.
Next is the hair itself. Dark, coarse hair carries more pigment and gives the laser a clearer target. Fine or light hair, less.
Then we ask about recent sun and self-tanner. A tan, real or from a bottle, adds pigment to the skin. That changes the settings we'd use, and sometimes it means waiting before we start.
We'll also ask about medications that make skin more sensitive to light, recent waxing and any past skin reactions.
From there, we adjust the laser settings to your skin type and run a patch test on a small area. The patch test shows how your skin responds before any full session. Mild redness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a day.
Darker skin tones
Our technology is suitable for a wide range of skin tones, including darker skin. Treating darker skin well is less about the laser and more about care in how it's used. The settings have to match the skin, and we pay close attention to how it responds at the patch test before setting a pace for the plan, because we would rather take an extra step at the start than rush a treatment and regret it.
If you've been told elsewhere that laser hair removal isn't for you because of your skin tone, it's worth asking again. Results vary from person to person, and the assessment is how we find out what's realistic for you.
Light, gray, red and blond hair
Hair color matters just as much. Because the laser targets pigment in the hair, very light blond, red, gray and white hair carry little of the pigment it looks for. Laser hair removal often does much less for these hair colors, regardless of skin tone.
We'll tell you plainly at your consultation if your hair color is likely to limit your results. If we don't think you're a good candidate, we'll say so. Paying for a series that can't do what you hoped isn't good for anyone.
Why the assessment comes first, every time
Skipping it would be quicker. We don't, because the assessment is what makes laser hair removal suit the person in the chair. It lets us choose settings for your skin rather than a default, spot timing problems like a recent tan, and set realistic expectations about how many sessions you'll need and what the result should look like.
The goal of a full series is a lasting reduction in how much hair grows back and how coarse it is. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects hair in its active growth phase, so sessions are spaced several weeks apart. Most clients come back occasionally for maintenance after the main series.
Skin tone questions we hear often
Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?
Our technology is suited to a wide range of skin tones, including darker skin. The care comes from matching the settings to your skin and running a patch test first, which is what we do at every first visit.
Can I get laser hair removal if I have a tan?
Usually, wait. Keep the area out of the sun and away from self-tanner for around two weeks before a session. Tanned skin absorbs more of the laser's light, which makes treatment less effective and harder on your skin. It's one reason many people start in the cooler months, which we cover in why fall and winter are the best time to start.
Does laser hair removal work on gray hair?
Gray and white hair have very little pigment for the laser to target, so results are usually limited. We'll look at your hair at the consultation and give you an honest view.
